Back in the 1990s, when we put the first employment site on the Internet, some of the people who are now protesting - Monster and CareerBuilder - were very happy and dancing on the graves of newspapers. But now, something like this is going to have an impact on them, and obviously, they're not so happy. This is an evolution of Internet recruiting.
.Jobs is starting to look more and more like a standard generic TLD rather than the sponsored TLD it was approved as 5 years ago.
Today, it’s my pleasure to announce that Mr. Brian Cute has been named CEO of .ORG, The Public Interest Registry, effective February 1. It’s been an honor to serve as interim CEO over the past few months, and as I return to my position as Chairman of the Board, I – as well as the rest of the PIR team – look forward to working alongside Brian in cementing .ORG’s position as the most trusted domain.
As you know, PIR’s core mission is to serve the public interest and provide a safer, more secure Internet. Those primary values echo throughout Brian's work and general approach. A veteran of the Internet and communications industry for more than 12 years who most recently held the position of vice president of discovery services for Afilias, Brian has extensive experience with the domain name system (DNS), having also had management positions in both a leading domain name registrar, Network Solutions, as director of policy, and a leading registry, Verisign, as vice president of government relations until 2003. He has led initiatives on wait-list service, private domain registrations, the elimination of Bulk WHOIS, and numerous other ICANN policy matters.
As the Internet continues to grow, it becomes even more imperative that we protect the public’s best interest. I have no doubt that Brian’s experience combined with his strong leadership skills and intellect will further PIR’s leadership position in the continued evolution of the Internet.
Welcome, Brian.
PIR, Public Interest Registry, has named Brian Cute as CEO of .ORG. Mr. Cute will take over on February first and looks to be planning on taking .ORG into IDN territory once the New gTLD process officially launches sometime this year.
We will likely see versions of .COM, .NET (operated by VeriSign) in multiple languages. And, now with Mr. Cute at the helm of .ORG, we can expect IDN versions of this TLD as well.
VeriSign released its Domain Name Report for the third quarter of 2010. The report shows that domain registration have now exceeded 200 million. ccTLDs accounted for nearly 80 million of the total number of domain names registered. .CO likely accounted for nearly half of the 1.1 million new names registered in the ccTLD space.
